2011 in Review – Books & Comics

I know it’s the quality, not the quantity that matters, but I’m still pretty happy with how much I read this year. Not only that, but I finally got around to read some stuff I had on my ‘to read’ list for ages, and I re-read a few of my favourites.

Faves (in no particular order)

Heir to the Empire – The annotations by Timothy Zahn on the 20th Anniversary edition add insight on some details I hadn’t noticed. Revisiting the story after so long was great. Fingers crossed for the rest of the trilogy also having a 20th anniversary edition.

FreakAngels – A comic book gem I only discovered this year. 2011 was the year I became a Warren Ellis fangirl.

V for Vendetta – “Behind this mask there is more than just flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea… and ideas are bulletproof.”

Batalha – A masterfully written fable with great insights on life and all its ups and downs, twists and turns.

A Dance With Dragons – At. Freaking. Last. Let’s hope the rest of the novels are out a lot faster than this one or else we’ll never know how the story ends.

BatWoman – Decent story, interesting characters and the best damned art I’ve seen in a comic in years. I’m following the monthly series after DC’s reboot.

All-Star Batman & Robin the Boy Wonder – This was an end of the year surprise, of sorts. I love Frank Miller’s Batman. I don’t even care that he’s ‘not in character’. He’s The Goddamn Batman.

Here’s the Giant Wall of Books 2011 Edition, after the cut.
