Star Wars: The Old Republic 20 minute dev walkthrough

BioWare has shown a 20 minute developer walkthrough of Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Here’s the first of four parts:

And you can check the whole thing here.

It seems pretty interesting, and the Sith Warrior class is catching my eye. Then again so are the other classes… :p I hope the Light Side equivalent of the Sith Warrior has moves as cool as those, though.

  1. I just hope it doesn’t pull a SW:Galaxies and screw everyone over every patch.. my TK got nerfed, then better then nerfed again.. I put a lot of time into him… then they completly screwed the pooch with the “New Experience”. WTF?

I love the SWtOR series so far, but I’m kinda bummed that they restrict your class, don’t seem to allow dual classing, etc.. what it really looks like in the preview is the OR games but in an MMO environment.. Kind of like Co-oping KoTOR πŸ˜‰ Could be fun. I hope the graphics get a little better, they look dated (force fields, etc).

Did I mention to you yet that I started reading “The Name of Tee Wind” by Patrick Rothfuss. Is very good, if you like Martin, you should dig this series too.

PS: I think I’m liking the bounty hunter… The SW looks cool, but the bounty hunter has a flame thrower πŸ˜€

How is the husband’s work on the PS3 going?

  2. Ah, I also played Galaxies and am hoping SWToR doesn’t come out like SWG did. I was in the beta test and when they announced the game was coming out, it was nowhere near ready. : Lots of bugs, even more serious ones like losing your character, or going out of sync with the server and having to wait for a GM to fix your situation – a least the ‘losing your character’ was that way, not even the server restarts fixed it. I played a bit at the beginning (I’m a big Star Wars fan), but soon gave up because I was essentially paying to play a beta.

About SWToR, yeah they’re restricting classes a bit, but I’m guessing it’s so they have an easier time balancing the classes. If balancing 6 or 10 classes is complicated, I can only imagine doing the same with a ton of class combos. πŸ™‚

I loved that they showed there is a dual wield option. :> On Knights of the Old Republic my character walked around with a lightsaber in each hand (red + blue).

Book-wise I started reading a non-Fantasy/non-SciFi book (I try to alternate a bit between styles) recently. Am still at the beginning so don’t know if it’s any good. πŸ˜›

The ‘PS3 Project’, as I’ve started calling hasn’t started yet. :p We’ve been busy with some stuff (some of it unexpected). I’ll be sure to post about it when we do start doing our experiments.

But meantime, we came across a doubt you may know how to clarify. We have a 5.1 Creative sound system, and my husband told me we’d only be able to use the TV speakers themselves if we changed from the PC to the PS3, that is without spending a lot of money on an adapter. Is it true or is there a cheap ‘workaround’ for this?

    Thanks in advance! πŸ™‚

  3. Hrm, not too sure if i can answer your question. I know with my TV i have an optical out port. Depending on the age of your TV and the model you may have optical out, digital coax out (1 RCA) or regular RCA L&R out.

If the creative 5.1 speaker set has either an RCA-type digital coax in or an optical in (the one my friend has, does), then you should be able to run a cable from the TV to the speaker set. Of course you might have a model that only used the earphone jack-type connection in which case I have no idea what to do??

If the TV has the optical or coax out, it should pipe the audio data through from the PS3’s HDMI cable to the digital out, and your speakers should work.

Again, I have no idea what model of TV you have or model of speakers, so I couldn’t tell you for sure.

Probably not very helpful, sorry. 😦

  4. I’m not sure what model is our TV. It’s a Samsung 37″ LCD that we bought a couple of years ago. But it doesn’t have any of those two things you mentioned. :p

We’ll investigate about possible solutions for this as soon as we start getting ‘hands on’ time with the PS3 as a media center. πŸ™‚

  5. Oh I just remembered something, related to this post! Have you heard about the rumor that SWToR will have player housing?

If it’s true, I’m betting they’re doing it because it’s a feature that WoW lacks. And if they do it right, and allow people do do stuff like decorate and such, it will appeal to a niche market. Now the question is. how long, after this rumor shows, will it take Blizzard to ‘counter-attack’ with player housing? :p

  6. I’m sad. Such an awesome trailer and such brilliant presentations and it is all for a MMORPG… How great would it be if they had done it like a good ol’ offline RPG, the way they used to, enabling them to polish the graphics, develop the storyline at a more personal level and such?
And Blizzard will probably take it upon themselves to add the housing feature in Cataclysm… I wouldn’t be surprised; they’re at the top for a reason πŸ˜‰

  7. I hadn’t heard that rumor, no. It would be cool if they had it, and they made it affordable πŸ˜‰ It’s a general pet peeve of mine when they put player housing in games and then make it so expensive that casual players (like myself) can rarely afford it, or have to choose between it and upgrading equipment (equipment always wins).

I liked the player housing in SW:G, it was actually on the map and you had little towns, etc. FFXI, has player housing, but if I remember correctly (has been a long while since i played it), it was off map and unseen. But I think you got it for free??

I was actually thinking of rejoining WoW at some point. Player housing would make a nice addition, and I miss my cow. I’m debating between it & LotRO since I have characters on both, and both guilds I belonged to no longer exist.

LotRO has player housing. Its neat, I never bothered getting a house. It was too much work to get to and from it, and again it costs too much for ownership & upkeep. I’d rather get better equipment. πŸ˜‰

  8. I’ve recently reactivated my WoW account because of the recent changes on old Azeroth that were announced were coming in Cataclysm.

Since I’ve always played on the Alliance side, I’ve never seen much of the Horde zones. They’ll be gone forever as they are now when the new expansion comes (which I’m guessing will take a while), I decided to level a male BElf Paladin to 60.

It’s a good excuse to do this, and I’ve been wanting to have a PvP horde character for a while, since at least in our battlegroup, the Alliance is really horrible in PvP and to be very honest, I’m tired of always loosing. :p

  9. @TNG Although I’ve been feeling like playing solo lately, I’ve never understood the resistance of Portuguese gamers to online games. :p

Don’t get me wrong – I loved KotOR and it’s still one of my favourite RPGs, but I’d like to have the chance to play online with some friends. Not necessarily in an MMO environment, but at least something like the online play of NwN and such. πŸ™‚

  10. It’s because the portuguese are violently allergic to paying for anything. Just look at the piracy rates… through the roof, even for people who COULD pay for the things they pirate.
